Utility wood pole reinforcement is becoming an increasingly important option for DNOs managing ageing overhead line networks.
We’ve been having this conversation for a long time.
Having assessed and reinforced thousands of wood poles, we’ve seen first-hand how attitudes towards reinforcement have changed. There was a time when many DNOs were reluctant to consider strengthening an existing pole. Replacement was the familiar route, even when a pole still had enough structural capacity to remain in service.
We understood that. Replacing a pole was established, straightforward and easy to programme. Reinforcement required a different approach: assess the pole properly, understand its residual strength and determine whether strengthening it would provide a safe and worthwhile alternative.
Today, the landscape looks very different.
Wood utility poles are in short supply. Sustainability now plays a much greater role in asset management. And at the same time, DNOs need to manage ageing infrastructure efficiently while maintaining network resilience and minimising disruption.
As a result, reinforcement deserves a much earlier place in the conversation.
Why Wood Pole Reinforcement Is Gaining Momentum
The pressure on replacement timber makes every suitable existing pole more valuable.
In one programme we undertook involving 367 “S” poles across low, high and extra-high voltage networks, we identified 290 poles – 79% – as fit for purpose (minimum 10 years). A further 23 of the confirmed “D” poles were recommended for reinforcement. In total, 85% of the poles assessed were returned to service.
That is the value of assessing the asset properly before deciding its fate.
As timber availability tightens and pressure on existing networks increases, results like these demonstrate why reinforcement is gaining momentum as a practical alternative to replacement.
Assessing Wood Poles Before Replacement
Our approach has always started with assessment rather than assumption.
Our PASS system, (Pole Analysis and Structural Security), has been used across UK utility power networks for many years to assess wood poles and identify those that can be returned to service or considered for reinforcement.
We’ve seen the value of this approach repeatedly.
We’ve even assessed poles that had been discarded during replacement programmes and found that many still had useful structural capacity.
That experience matters because the objective isn’t simply to identify deterioration. It’s to understand what can realistically be done with the asset that remains.
Identifying Wood Poles for Reinforcement
Once we understand the condition and residual strength of a pole, we can determine whether reinforcement is appropriate.
Rather than treating every deteriorated pole as a replacement candidate, DNOs can identify poles that offer an opportunity for life extension.
Where reinforcement is suitable, it can:
- extend the service life of the existing pole
- reduce unnecessary replacement
- help manage pressure on replacement timber
- eliminate CIs and CMLs associated with replacement
- provide greater flexibility across large maintenance programmes
- save considerable costs associated with utility pole replacement
Furthermore, because we can undertake both the assessment and the reinforcement, we can move efficiently from identifying an opportunity to carrying out the pole reinforcement work.
