There are few things that beat the sound of excited laughter coming from a children’s playground – and yet, over recent years, those joyful peals of excitement are becoming, for some communities, simply a memory of “the good old days”.
I remember as a child swinging as high as I could, and in some cases, the swing structure coming out of the ground with me! The added rocking only fuelled the laughter and sense of adventure.
Times have changed – and rightly so. Safety has to be a major consideration wherever our children play and, indeed, wherever we play ourselves, whether we’re climbing high into the canopy, launching onto a zip wire, scuttling across high wires or admiring the views from up high in some of our stately homes and gardens.
For the people responsible for these sites, however, there is another side to the picture. There are inspections, maintenance schedules, budgets, risk assessments, records and an ongoing responsibility to make sure that the structures people use remain safe.
And sometimes, a playground or recreational attraction closes because nobody knows the condition of one of its most important components: the wood poles supporting it.
That was brought home to us recently when we were asked to provide a proposal for assessing the wood pole supports in a children’s playground. The playground had been closed because the condition of the poles was unknown.
I completely understand why that decision was made. When children use a structure and there is uncertainty about the condition of a load-bearing timber, caution has to come first.
However, there is an important question that follows.
What if the timber is in considerably better condition than anyone expects?
That is where wood pole testing can change the conversation.
When nobody knows the condition of the timber
Anyone responsible for a public playground, holiday park, adventure attraction or outdoor activity centre understands the difficult balance between safety, availability and cost.
You have a duty to protect the people using your facilities, but you also have a responsibility to manage those facilities effectively. When a timber support raises a concern and nobody can establish its actual structural condition, restricting access may be the only sensible decision available.
Unfortunately, closing a facility can have consequences that reach much further than the structure itself.
Children lose somewhere to play. Parents lose a facility they may rely upon. Visitors lose part of the experience they have paid for. Operators lose revenue. Councils and landowners face additional expenditure. Maintenance teams have another problem to investigate and resolve.
And everyone has to wait for an answer.
This is where I think there is a significant opportunity for wood pole testing for playgrounds and recreational environments.
Many organisations already operate comprehensive inspection and maintenance regimes. They inspect equipment, fixings, ropes, platforms, cables and other components. They carry out routine visual checks and respond appropriately when something raises concern.
But have they ever actually tested the timber supports?
For some organisations, the answer will be yes. For others, it may simply never have occurred to them that specialist structural timber testing was available for recreational structures.
Timber can tell a very different story beneath the surface
Timber is remarkably resilient. A substantial wooden support can spend decades outdoors through rain, wind, frost, heat and repeated cycles of wetting and drying.
At the same time, timber can deteriorate internally in ways that aren’t immediately obvious from the surface.
Decay can develop around the ground-line zone, where moisture and environmental conditions can create a favourable environment for fungal activity. Consequently, a pole can retain a respectable external appearance while losing sound timber internally.
The reverse can also happen.
Weathered timber can look tired, cracked or aged while retaining considerably more sound wood and structural capacity than its appearance might suggest.
That is why visual inspection and structural assessment answer different questions.
A visual inspection can identify signs that warrant further investigation. Testing can help establish what is actually happening within the timber.
This is something we see regularly in our work.
We sometimes assess poles that have caused concern and find that they retain substantially more sound timber than initially suspected. That doesn’t happen with every pole, and we would never suggest otherwise. Sometimes deterioration has progressed too far and the evidence points clearly towards remedial work or replacement.
Why the ground-line area matters
Our experience comes from more than two decades of assessing wood utility poles for the UK electricity distribution industry. During that time, we have assessed many thousands of wood poles and developed a detailed understanding of how deterioration and damage affect structural capacity.
While we assess the entire pole, from ground level to the pole top, particular attention is given to the ground-line zone. Approximately 90% of decay occurs from ground level to around 100 mm below ground level, making this a critical area wherever a wood pole or substantial timber support enters the ground.
However, decay isn’t the only concern. During our assessment, we look for evidence of deterioration and damage along the full length of the pole, including top rot, bird damage, splits, mechanical damage, previous repairs and other defects that could affect structural integrity.
We combine our visual assessment with measured data capturing the relevant information digitally and using specialist software to calculate the pole’s residual strength value and assess its fitness for purpose against the requirements of the structure.
For an asset owner it provides a structured, evidence-based assessment of the pole as a whole, while giving particular attention to the area where decay is most likely to affect its structural capacity.
Timber supports are part of the adventure
Once you start looking for them, timber structures appear throughout recreational environments.
A playground might contain wood poles, struts and supports for climbing equipment, swings, platforms, bridges or other structures. A local authority, school, estate or leisure operator may have dozens or even hundreds of timber components spread across different sites.
Then there are adventure parks and high ropes courses, where timber structures become part of the experience itself. Platforms sit high amongst the trees, bridges connect different sections of a course and zip wires carry participants through the landscape.
Holiday parks and visitor attractions provide another obvious application, with woodland trails, play areas, adventure activities, bridges and elevated walkways forming part of the visitor experience.
The settings vary, but the engineering question remains remarkably similar:
What condition is the timber actually in, and does it retain sufficient structural capacity for the job it is being asked to do?
That question may never have been asked before.
And that is important.
What if your timber structures have never been tested?
Wood pole testing for playgrounds, adventure parks and recreational structures can provide an additional layer of evidence alongside an existing inspection and maintenance regime.
If you manage an adventure park, playground, holiday park, visitor attraction or outdoor activity centre, you may already have an excellent inspection regime.
Your team may know the structures intimately. You may have detailed maintenance records and regular visual inspections. And you may have established procedures for dealing with defects and replacing components when necessary.
Yet if nobody has ever assessed the internal condition and residual strength of the timber, you may still have an information gap.
For an organisation responsible for a large number of timber structures, establishing that information can provide a much stronger basis for long-term asset management.
Rather than making decisions based primarily on age or appearance, you can assess individual structures according to their measured condition.
That can help you determine whether to keep a structure in service, monitor it, treat or reinforce it, or plan for replacement.
And sometimes, that information can prevent an unnecessary closure.
Sometimes the timber is better than you expected
There is something particularly satisfying about arriving to assess a timber pole that everyone is worried about and discovering that it is in considerably better condition than anticipated.
I think there is a simple human reason for this.
When something relates to safety, our minds naturally look for the potential problem. If a timber support looks old, has some visible deterioration or has been standing for decades, it is understandable that people start wondering how much structural capacity remains.
That caution has value. Nobody should take unnecessary risks with structures used by children or the public.
However, uncertainty can make a problem feel larger than it actually is.
Testing gives you the opportunity to replace that uncertainty with evidence.
Occasionally the evidence confirms significant deterioration. Sometimes it identifies a structure that needs reinforcement or remedial treatment. It might be that replacement becomes the appropriate decision.
And more often than not we inspect a pole that retains considerably more structural capacity than its appearance suggested.
Those results matter too.
They may allow an asset owner to avoid replacing a structurally sound component. They may provide the evidence needed to develop a sensible maintenance programme. In the right circumstances, they may even contribute to a decision to reopen a facility following the appropriate safety and operational checks.
That is why I believe testing should be about finding the answer rather than looking for a fault.
Keeping places for people to play, explore and enjoy
There is another reason this subject matters to us all.
We need places where children can play.
Parks, playgrounds, outdoor spaces and recreational facilities where children can run around, climb, explore and make memories are vital parts of a healthy community. We also need places where adults can experience a little adventure themselves, whether that’s walking across a timber bridge, following a woodland trail or stepping onto a high platform before launching onto a zip wire.
When one of those facilities closes, the loss can feel surprisingly significant.
The people responsible for these sites, meanwhile, have to make difficult decisions while balancing safety, budgets, operational pressures and the expectations of the people who use their facilities.
Bringing utility pole experience into the recreational sector

The electricity distribution industry has taught us a great deal about managing large populations of ageing timber assets. It has also taught us that replacing everything that looks old is neither necessary nor sustainable.
The same engineering principles have relevance wherever timber forms part of a structure that people rely upon.
That includes playgrounds, adventure parks, high ropes courses, zip wires, holiday parks, visitor attractions, outdoor activity centres, timber bridges, elevated walkways, gardens and recreational facilities.
The engineering principles remain the same: understand the condition of the timber, establish its remaining structural capacity and give the person responsible the information they need to make a sound decision.
From uncertainty to a better engineering decision
The timber supporting a playground or adventure attraction may have stood for many years, absorbing the weather and carrying its loads while thousands of people have enjoyed the experience built around it.
Eventually, though, someone needs to understand what condition that timber has reached.
Testing gives you measured evidence to help make that decision.
Sometimes the answer will be that a pole needs attention. Sometimes reinforcement or replacement will be the sensible route. And sometimes, perhaps most reassuringly, the timber will prove to be in considerably better condition than anyone expected.
That is the value of testing. It gives you the information to make the right decision for the structure, the people using it and the organisation responsible for it.
